Buzzkill – Buzzfeed Goes After Christian TV Hosts for Attending Church

Buzzfeed, the left leaning internet news site run by Editor in Chief Ben Smith, recently launched a full frontal assault on television hosts of the HGTV show, “Fixer Upper.” (see link) The apparent crime of hosts Chip and Joanna Gaines? Attending Church.

The Gaineses apparently attend the Antioch Community Church in Waco, Texas. According to Buzzfeed the Pastor at that church has referred fixer_upper_logo_hgtvto homosexuality as a sin and advocates that a marriage should be between one man and one woman. The Gaineses, however, have not publicly addressed the subject of homosexuality or same sex marriage.

In creating a controversy where none exists, Buzzfeed is engaged in bullying and forced compliance to compel other to conform to their singular world view; or face the prospect of demonization and ostracization.

One of the hallmarks of civil society is the ability to have differences of opinion and still have civil discourse. But in the state of our current society both the left and right media have a tendency to demonize opposing points of view. Civil discourse is disappearing. Instead we are seeing what could be considered the rise of the Fascist Left, where conformity to the prevailing liberal ideological purity is an end in an of itself worthy of bully tactics like the kind in which Buzzfeed is clearly engaged by publishing such an article. Furthermore, the Gaineses have not even engaged in this discussion making the bullying tactics even worse. In this case the are simply guilt by association.

It is still OK to be Christian in this country. After all, we are still guaranteed “free exercise” of religion in the First Amendment of the Constitution. If you are a Christian, a homosexual, or a homosexual Christian, you deserve respect as a human being even if your views are different from others. Conformity of thought is not a useful goal in an advanced civilized society. Mutual respect, however, is. Buzzfeed should apologize to the Gaineses for putting them into a controversy that only exists because of their reporting, not anything the Gaineses have said and done.
